What is the receive current requirement?
Standby current consumption is less than 430 mA . Well suited for "D" type batteries.
What is the Frequency stability?
3 PPM per 10 degrees centigrade.
Example: at 14.2 MHz -- equal to 14.2 x 3 = 42.6 Hz A total frequency drift of 42.6 Hz for a temperature change of 10º C.
For instance, if the temperature changes from 20 to 30 degrees centigrade, there could be frequency drift of 42.6 Hz.
Is the SG-2020 suitable for data communications?
Yes - for most available protocols.
What is the switch over time tx/rx and back?
Is the RS 232 serial interface available?
Not at this time; it is planned for future models, but no projected date is available.
Is there a jack for a modem, and what is the necessary input voltage if available?
T/R audio are both available from 8-pin mic connector, including PTT, but no supply voltage.
Where is the headphone jack?
Headphones can be plugged into the "EXT. SPEAKER" jack on the back of the chassis.
Is the SG-2020 type approved for marine use?
Does the SG-2020 have a notch filter?
No. But available with an ADSP option and rejection of -57dB.
Can you receive AM broadcast stations?
Yes, using either sideband.
Is there an AM detector in the SG-2020?
Can you use the SG-2020 to work 10 Meter FM?
FM is not provided as an option in this product.
Is there a less expensive option for a portable battery pack? Possibly a kit?
Not at this present time.
What suggestions do you have for lowest possible battery consumption?
Use headphones and turn off the backlight.
Is there a cover for the front panel available for protection in the field?
Yes. This is provided as an option. See the SG-2020 PortaPak Options page for details.
Does the SG-2020 have reverse polarity protection?
Yes, the fuse opens, it is an internal, self-recovering 5 amp fuse.
Is there a mic gain control on the SG-2020?
There is not a mic gain control on the SG-2020. However, you can bypass the VOGAD compression circuit by removing a jumper inside, if you wish.
How is the RF power adjustment made?
The RF power adjustment is made by pressing the CMD + NB buttons simultaneously, and turning the main tuning knob. (See manual page 9).
Is it possible to modify the radio to operate outside of the amateur bands?
Full transmit coverage is available by an easy modification. We will supply that information as needed.
How do you change from one amateur band to another?
To change from one band to another, use the memory channels. It comes pre-programmed with 20 memories that cover most ham bands. These can be changed to whatever frequency on any band that you choose.
What is provided for mobile and base installation?
SGC provides four rubber feet for base installation; four strips of velcro for mobile installation; one mounting plate for a firm mobile or base installation on a pedestal mounting system (pedestal not included).
What is VOGAD and how does it work?
VOGAD, which stands for Voice Operated Gain Adjusting Device is an old military acronym used to describe audio compressor circuits in general. Simply put, VOGAD is an audio frequency compressor.
What does SCAF stand for?
Switched Capacitor Audio Filter
What about PSK-31 mode?
The SG-2020 is being used with PSK-31 with great success. Read our technical note about it.
For the input and output of the signal you can use the microphone connector. For setup we suggest first setting up the SG-2020 at maximum power output (setting 'M' in the power mode, and it is the last step when the main knob is rotated clockwise). Then adjust the input level for 5 or 10 watts and this will give you the best performance. You will notice that your capture ratio and signal throughout will not improve by setting the output level at 20 watts but will stress your power supply system or the radio unnecessarily.
How many LED's should be lit without a signal on the front panel S-Meter?
Only one. Occasionally, with high background noise two may be lit. For additional information, please see SG-2020 manual, page 25.
Will the SG-2020 Operate with less than 12 Volts?
1. For full spec compliance, the radio input voltage should be 13.6 to 18 VDC.
2. For full receive spec compliance with reduced transmit power, the radio input voltage should not be less than 10.5 VDC.
3. The radio will operate with reduced receive and transmit specs with an input voltage greater than 9.5 VDC.
4. The radio will cease to function at or below 9 VDC.
Can the SG-2020 detect for AM so I can listen to SW broadcasts?
The SG-2020 ADSP and ADSP2 model radios work great in AM as they have 57db of tone reduction. It sounds almost like true AM.
Is the SG-2020 ADSP fully automatic?
The SG-2020 is fully automatic with Spectral Noise Suppression at -18db and Notch Filter Auto-Tracking Suppression at -57db.
Is a power cord included with a new unit?
Power cords are not supplied with standard or ADSP models of the SG-2020. There is a set of terminals supplied to allow any type of connection.
